Anya Tish Gallery presents the exhibition Adela Andea:  Bioluminescence. Reception for the Artist, Friday, January 7, 2011, 6:00 to 8:30 pm. Exhibition on view January 7 – February 5, 2011.

Anya Tish Gallery is excited to announce Bioluminescence, the first solo exhibit of works by Romanian-born, Texas-based artist, Adela Andea, whose uniquely illuminated and kinetic sculptures create futuristic eco-systems using consumer electronics and mass produced objects that ebb and flow between organic biological forms and glowing technological systems.

Andea lives and works in Denton, TX and is currently teaching at the University of North Texas while completing an MFA in New Media.
Andea’s light sculptures re-define the term “bioluminescence”, which refers to the naturally occurring production of light by a living organism, into a new mechanized biosphere that is powered exclusively by manmade electronics. The gallery is submerged into an ambiguous and mystifying landscape that is both a testament to the natural sciences as well as a prediction of technology in the future.

The exhibit features two large installations and several wall dependent sculptures that contain intricately weaved circuits of LED and CFL lights, computer hardware and manufactured building materials, which surge and flow across the gallery walls. Andea’s work embodies both a physical presence as well as ethereal sensibility that blurs the boundaries between organic and manufactured experiences and ultimately creates a fascinating visual hybrid between biological and industrial science.
