Thursday, Jan. 20, 2011 at 6:30PM, Voyages of the Dragons from the North.

Terrorizing coastlines, dominating rivers, and exploring the oceans, the Vikings achieved remarkable feats in open ships with a single square sail and oars. A dramatic find of a 30 metre long warship lead to a four year building process and a trial voyage from Denmark to Ireland and back, in the worlds biggest reconstructed Viking longship. Sail with us as we recreate the journey of the Sea Stallion from Glendalough – from wreck to archeaological experiment, from dream to reality.

Louise Kæmpe Henriksen (pictured) is curator at the The Viking Ship Museum in Roskilde, Denmark, the foremost Viking ship museum in Denmark. Henriksen was a member of the crew of the Seastallion, a replica of a Viking ship found at Roskilde Fjord. The crew embarked on a six-week journey to Dublin, Ireland from their home port of Roskilde, Denmark during the summer of 2008.

Cosponsored by Archaeological Institute of America - Houston Society and the Danish Consulate of Houston. This lecture is generously underwritten by SCAN-TRANS, INC.
