The Houston Museum of Natural Science presents an HMNS Special Lecture. Fascinating Speakers, Cutting Edge Science.  Hear about the latest scientific discoveries - from the world's foremost experts. Throughout the year, HMNS hosts a variety of distinguished lecturers to enhance your understanding of a current exhibition or provide new perspectives on captivating topics.

Tuesday, April 05, 2011 - 06:30 PM:  The Rise and Fall of the Comanches. Speaker:  S.C. Gwynne, (pictured) contributing editor to Texas Monthly magazine.

The Comanches stopped the drive of colonial Spain from Mexico and halted the French expansion from Louisiana. Their legendary fighting ability gave rise to the Texas Rangers and the development of the six-gun.

S.C. Gwynne will explore Spanish colonialism, the Civil War, destruction of the buffalo herds and the arrival of the railroads as well as the epic saga of Cynthia Ann Parker and her mixed-blood son Quanah, the last and greatest chief of the Comanches.

Sam Gwynne, contributing editor to Texas Monthly magazine and senior writer for the Dallas Morning News, will sign copies of his book Empire of the Summer Moon: Quanah Parker and the Rise and Fall of the Comanches, the Most Powerful Indian Tribe in American History following the lecture.
