The Houston Museum of Natural Science presents an HMNS Special Lecture. Fascinating Speakers, Cutting Edge Science.  Hear about the latest scientific discoveries - from the world's foremost experts. Throughout the year, HMNS hosts a variety of distinguished lecturers to enhance your understanding of a current exhibition or provide new perspectives on captivating topics.

Thursday, April 07, 2011 - 06:30 PM:  Strange New Worlds: The Search for Alien Planets and Life beyond Our Solar System. Speaker:  Ray Jayawardhana, Ph.D., Astrophysicist, University of Toronto.

Soon astronomers expect to find alien Earths by the dozens in orbit around distant suns. Before the decade is out, telltale signs that they harbor life may be found. If they succeed, the ramifications for all areas of human thought and endeavor-from religion and philosophy to art and biology-are breathtaking.

Explore the cutting-edge science of today's planet hunters, our prospects for discovering alien life, and the controversies at the forefront of extrasolar-planet research with renowned astronomer Ray Jayawardhana.

Dr. Jayawardhana is professor and Canada Research Chair in Observational Astrophysics at the University of Toronto as well as an award-winning science writer.

Following his lecture, he will be sign copies of his new book Strange New Worlds: The Search for Alien Planets and Life beyond Our Solar System.
