    Houston Modern Market (plus Houston Modern Market Lecture Series)

    Live Good Design in cooperation with Houston Mod presents Houston Modern Market – April 8th, 9th and 10th at Winter Street Studios, 2101 Winter Street, Houston, TX 77007.

    This inaugural event will kick off Modernism Month in Texas. The market will showcase Mid-Century, Vintage Modern and Contemporary Modern creations including fine art, furniture, jewelry, objects, design and architecture. Artists and vendors from all across the country will display their collections for public sale. The market will also feature informative lectures on Modernism in Interior Design, Texas Art and Architecture as well as an architecture tour of the great Phillip Johnson in Houston.

    Included will be a Friday night preview party with drink, delicacies, performing arts with a performance by Dominic Walsh Dance Theater, entertainment and first chance buying. Saturday and Sunday’s Modern Market will feature lectures and exhibits to accompany modern vendors showing and selling their modern treasures.

    Houston Modern Market Lecture Series:

    In addition to one-of-a-kind shopping, the market will also feature the HMM Lecture Series which is free with entrance to the market. The series kicks off on Wednesday, April 6th at 7:00pm at the Brown Auditorium inside the Museum of Fine Art Houston, 1001 Bissonet, Houston, TX 77005. Well known author and architectural historian, Stephen Fox will give an illustrated lecture on Modern Architecture in Houston. Fox is an adjunct lecturer in architecture at Rice University and The University of Houston, and author of The Campus Guide: Rice University, The Houston Architectural Guide, and The Galveston Architecture Guidebook. Fox is a regular contributor to CITE Magazine and has been described by The Houston Chronicle as, "a sort of unofficial collective conscience for the city..."

    The lecture series continues Saturday, April 9th at 11am at Winter Street Studios, 2101 Winter Street, Houston, TX 77007. Celebrated enthusiast and curator of Modern Architecture, Don Emmite will give a lecture on Russel Wright: Designs for Living. Don is a longtime collector and researcher of mid 20th century American design that includes classic modern furniture, Russel Wright designs and vintage appliances from the 1930s through the 1950s. In addition to his collections and curatorial experiences, his home has been featured in The Houston Chronicle, Houston Home and Garden Magazine and Atomic Ranch Magazine.

    At 2:00pm on Saturday afternoon the HMM Lecture Series welcomes local gallery owner William Reaves to the podium for a lecture entitled Lone Star Modernism: Texas Art at Mid-Century. Mr. Reaves is a gallerist, a collector and an avocational historian of twentieth-century Texas art. He currently serves as President of William Reaves Fine Art, the Houston-based gallery which he founded in 2007, the city’s only gallery exclusively devoted to historical Texas work. In its first four years of operation, the gallery has successfully mounted 28 exhibitions and published 14 catalogues related to early and mid-century Texas painting. Reaves was co-founder of the Center for the Study and Advancement of Early Texas Art (CASETA) in 2001, and served as President of the board of directors from 2003-2007.

    The lecture series will conclude at Winter Street Studios on Sunday, April 10th at 11:00 am with William F. Stern, FAIA. Stern will give the closing lecture entitled The Architecture of Phillip Johnson in Houston. William F. Stern, principal of Stern and Bucek Architects, studied architecture at Harvard University's Graduate School of Design, where he received a Master of Architecture degree. Stern and Bucek Architects lead a professional team in the conservation and preservation of the 1951 Menil House, designed by Philip Johnson for Dominique and John de Menil. Other significant projects of modern restoration include the 1997 renovation of Houston's Contemporary Arts Museum. Mr. Stern is an Adjunct Associate Professor at University of Houston's Gerald D. Hines College of Architecture.

    Winter Street Studios, 2101 Winter Street, Houston 77007 plays host to the Preview Party and Modern Market. Tickets for Friday night, April 8, Preview Party are fifty dollars and include admittance for the entire weekend market. Saturday April 9, and Sunday April 10, Modern Market tickets are ten dollars and can be purchased in advance or at the door.

    A portion of the proceeds benefit Houston Mod, a nonprofit aimed at preserving Houston’s modern heritage. Russell Howard is the organization’s president, “Houston is a city with a dynamic modern legacy. We at Houston Mod believe that The Houston Modern Market is an educational and fun way to bring local and national awareness to our city's modern legacy, and with our efforts, to promote its preservation”.

    Promoter Brian Hoffner, Live Good Design Events, states “Houston Modern Market is going to be one big fun party. This is a huge gathering of vintage and contemporary modern art and objects from around the country, combined with entertainment and education, all under the roof of Winter Street Studios, a spectacular venue. It’s an annual event not to be missed”.
