Cynthia Woods Mitchell Center for the Arts and Aurora Picture Show present a Film Screening: Veins in the Gulf, Wedesday, April 27, 7:30pm, at Aurora Picture Show, 1524 Sul Ross.

Join Shrimp Boat Projects, poet Martha Serpas and filmmakers Elizabeth Coffman and Ted Hardin for a free outdoor screening of Veins in the Gulf, a documentary that traces the history of rapidly disappearing bayous, the environmental crisis of southern Louisiana, and the international impact of Cajun culture. Through interviews with fishermen, engineers, poets, and scientists, bear witness as Louisiana residents confront the mortality of their culture and a community tries to solve its environmental crises.

Join the Mitchell Center for fresh Gulf Coast shrimp and this exploration of southern culture and discover where great American literature, music, seafood and oil have come from for the past century.

Shrimp Boat Projects is a year-long interdisciplinary Mitchell Center residency focused on the Gulf Coast shrimp industry of Galveston Bay, viewed as both a profession and a way of life. This residency will take place aboard a working shrimp boat, and will be directed by artist and scholar Zach Moser and architect Eric Leshinsky.

Not only does a boat have access to all aspects of the region from the coastal marshes and major cities to the offshore oil rigs and reefs, but a shrimp boat in particular is a potent yet largely unacknowledged nexus between a range of internationally prominent socio-economic themes including globalization, tourism, environmental awareness, immigration and human labor.

The screening takes place in the backyard of Aurora Picture Show (1524 Sul Ross Street, Houston, TX 77002) on Wednesday, April 27 at 7:30PM. Filmmakers Elizabeth Coffman and Ted Hardin will host a Q&A following the film, and the audience will be treated to fresh Gulf Coast shrimp courtesy of the Shrimp Boat Projects and samples from Saint Arnold Brewing Company. Attendees are encouraged to bring blankets or lawn chairs for this free night of films.
