The Moores School of Music at the University of Houston presents Il Postino, By Daniel Catán. April 8, 9, 10(matinee), and 11, 2011. Buck Ross, producer/director. Brett Mitchell,* music director.

Based on the beloved film and novel from the 1990’s, this gorgeous opera will transport you to an Italian island where the poet Pablo Neruda befriends an illiterate postman and teaches him to win a girl through poetry. Written for Placido Domingo, this opera premiered in Los Angeles in September 2010 and is scheduled for performances in Vienna and Paris.

The composer was so delighted with our 2009 production of his Florencia en el Amazonas that he has honored us by allowing us to present the first production of Il Postino in the U.S. after its premiere.

Those familiar with Mr. Catán’s music will tell you it will surely be the most beautiful opera you have heard in a long, long time.

Our spring opera will be the second installment of our Daniel Catán Project, which began with our production of Florencia en el Amazonas in 2009. Every two years we will be doing another of Mr. Catán’s extraordinarily beautiful operas until he runs out of them!Future projects include Rappaccini’s Daughter, and Salsipuedes.

Sung in Spanish with English and Spanish surtitles.

The Moores Opera Center, now entering its 25th year, provides the Houston area with professional, affordable, quality opera, ranging from classics to contemporary, and has featured many Houston and world premieres throughout its repertoire.
