Texas is too big for a mere groundhog to predict the weather. Will there be six more weeks of winter in Texas or is spring coming early this year? Come to The Weather Museum on Groundhog Day to find out! Alamo the Texas Longhorn will look for his shadow and help The Weather Museum’s meteorologists with the official forecast. Students from area schools will be on hand to celebrate Groundhog Day with Alamo and participate in fun activities throughout The Weather Museum.

Groundhog Day has been celebrated every February 2 since 1887. Traditionally, after a long winter’s sleep, the groundhog comes out of its hole to search for its shadow. If the groundhog sees his shadow, six more weeks of winter are expected. The theory is the sunny days in winter are the result of cold, dry arctic air masses, which indicate that more cold weather should be expected. However, cloudy winter days come from mild, moist tropical air, which means that spring is just around the corner.
