Throughout the year, HMNS hosts a variety of distinguished lecturers to enhance your understanding of a current exhibition or provide new perspectives on captivating topics.

Monday, May 2, 2011 at 6:30pm:  Voyage on the Wine-Dark Sea - The Discovery of a Legendary Minoan Ship.  Featured speaker:  Elpida Hadjidaki, Ph.D., (pictured) Department of Marine Antiquities, Greece

Artists depicted them, Homer catalogued them, and Jacques Cousteau searched his entire life for them: the legendary ships the Minoans built to sail the Mediterranean. Hear the story of the fabulous discovery of the Minoan shipwreck 30 meters underwater, near the Greek island Alonnesos. Carrying thousands of wine amphorae, this is the largest shipwreck of the Classical period yet found, measuring 100 feet long, and is dated to the 5 century B.C.

Dr. Elpida Hadjidaki led the underwater expedition that found and studied the ships used by this great ancient civilization. She is Director of Department of Marine Antiquities, Greece.

Cosponsored by Archaeological Institute of America - Houston Society and with additional assistance from the Hellenic Cultural Center and the Cretan Society.
