A unique festival in Houston! Art, education and culture unite to bring Spanish and Flamenco arts to the people of Houston. Solero Flamenco, San Jacinto College South and the Consulate General of Spain present the 2011 Houston Spanish & Flamenco Festival, April 14th – 16th!

This unique festival will offer the opportunity for the general public, students and artists to partake in classes, lecture/demonstrations, exhibits, and performances!

The three-day festival encompasses the passionate art of Flamenco song, guitar, and dance. Flamenco, born from the folklore of the gypsies of Andalucía, Spain, is enjoyed and studied in all corners of the globe. San Jacinto College students and the general public will have an opportunity to learn about the flamenco arts here at home by registering for any of the eight workshops being held by Solero Flamenco founders and festival directors, Jeremías García and Irma La Paloma, along with guest artists Pilar Andújar, Timo Lozano, and Solangel “Lali” Calix.Performances will also be held each night by other participating artists, including local musical group Celt Iberia, who perform the unique sounds of Spanish Celtic music. Vendors will be onsite to offer shopping opportunities, as well as student art exhibits in a variety of media.“This unique festival unites the collaboration of three entities whose mutual goal is to bring the Spanish and Flamenco arts to the community and provide access to students through performance, instruction, and cultural exchange,” said La Paloma. “The festival offers something for everyone: students, aficionados, dancers, choreographers, singers, guitarists, and enthusiasts.”Spain’s Pilar Andújar will dazzle audiences, making her Houston debut at the festival. A graduate of the Royal School of Dance in Madrid, Spain, and Classical Dance from the Conservatory of Alicante, Andújar has travelled the world with her art.“The arts teach us to understand the human experience,” said Dr. Maureen Murphy, San Jacinto College South president. “Our flamenco festival will celebrate a part of our regional heritage, engaging our hearts as well as our minds. I urge you to join San Jacinto College South in supporting this worthy cultural experience for our community.”Select Events:April 14th, 2011 6:30pm
