During April, Holocaust Museum Houston presents Genocide Awareness Month, working to raise awareness about genocide and actions individuals and groups can take to end genocide. Several genocides began in April or have a major anniversary in the month. For this reason, many organizations and institutions around the world have set aside April to be a month of genocide awareness and action against genocide.Genocide Awareness Month

The Museum has many activities and programs for all ages during the month. The theme for genocide awareness month is learning to be an upstander – a person who stands up for others and takes actions on their behalf. Thirty activities – one for each day of the month – are being highlighted as positive steps individuals and groups can take to stop genocide starting today.

Holocaust Museum Houston will host the Genocide Film Series, featuring three films to educate and commemorate events of genocide as part of “Genocide Awareness Month.”  All of these films will be shown in the Albert and Ethel Herzstein Theater at Holocaust Museum Houston Morgan Family Center, 5401 Caroline St., in Houston's Museum District.

    The Last Survivor

"The Last Survivor” is a character-based, feature-length documentary film that presents the stories of genocide survivors and their struggles to make sense of tragedy by working to educate, motivate and promulgate a civic response to mass atrocity crimes, with a focus on awareness, prevention and promoting social activism and civic engagement.

Following the lives of survivors of four different genocides and mass atrocities – The Holocaust, Rwanda, Darfur and Congo – “The Last Survivor” presents a unique opportunity to learn from the lessons and mistakes of the past in order to have lasting social impact in the face of similar issues today.

Shot on location in five countries across four continents, the film focuses on the universality of the horror of genocide – combating the misguided notion that genocide is something that happens “over there.” Rather, the film asks its audience to consider genocide as an evil that has occurred on nearly every continent and one that affects all human beings.

Seating is limited, and advanced registration is required. Tickets are $4 per person per film for Holocaust Museum Houston members and $5 for non-members.
