The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston presents a MFAH Special Lecture -  Near Andersonville: Winslow Homer's Civil War, Thursday, March 17, 2011 at 6:30 PM at the Caroline Wiess Law Building.  Presented by Dr. Peter H. Wood, Professor Emeritus, Duke University.

Winslow Homer's Near Andersonville— (pictured) one of the artist's most striking paintings—disappeared for a century after its completion in 1866. The revealing title of this depiction of an enslaved black woman was not uncovered until over a century later.

In his provocative presentation on this forgotten work, Dr. Peter H. Wood will integrate art and history to offer a fresh vantage point on Homer's early career, the struggle to end slavery, and the closing years of the Civil War, when the outcome was far more doubtful than most now realize.

This program is free and open to the public. A reception to meet the speaker follows the lecture.

This lecture is presented as the inaugural lecture for the MFAH sesquicentennial commemoration of the Civil War, 1861-1865. Once a year over the following three years, the MFAH will host a lecture on the subject of art and the Civil War.  Each lecture will be accompanied by a related installation in the American art galleries.

Funding for this lecture series is provided by the Five-A, the African American Art Advisory Association at the MFAH, the MFAH support group American Art and Wine, and the department of American painting and sculpture at the MFAH.
