The Menil Collection presents a Lecture – Adrienne Kaeppler: The Voyages of Captain Cook and the Art of the Pacific, Thursday, March 10, 2011, 7:00 p.m.

Adrienne L. Kaeppler (pictured) is a social/cultural anthropologist who received her Ph.D. from the University of Hawaii. In 1980, she joined the Smithsonian where she is now Curator of Oceanic Ethnology at the National Museum of Natural History. She was principal curator for the exhibit, “James Cook and the Exploration of the Pacific,” whose exhibition catalogue was awarded “Le prix international du livre d`art tribal 2009.”Her many honors include the “Frigate Bird Award” for the study of the arts of Oceania.

This talk introduces the reinstallation of the museum’s Pacific Islands art collection and coincides with the exhibitions “Upside Down: Arctic Realities” and “Ancestors of the Lake.”
