The Jung Center of Houston presents the exhibition Sandra York: Finding Her Feet.  On view March 2 through March 29.

Sandra York's subtle, personal, intimate work occasionally takes on social causes. It speaks to bigger ideas indirectly through association and suggests layers of meaning behind appearances.

    The artist writes:

Like everyone, I am a product of both my parents and my birthplace. My Father, an architect, gave me love of abstract painting. My Mother gave me my sense of intimacy and honesty. Growing up in the Valley of Texas near Mexico gave me my sense of color. Because I was thirty when I started painting, I was never at a loss for content and abstraction and color quickly became my way. Intimacy is the deepest part of my work.

Each life story told by a woman helps to contradict the myths told about women in a man’s world. Because it takes all of the hidden layers of a life to build the public story, this work is an invitation to the private stories both within and behind the paintings.

As in any woman’s life, some spaces are revealed, some are veiled, some are locked. Always we are reminded that a whole woman – and this work speaks about all contemporary women – is the sum of her many concurrent lives: personal, spiritual, domestic, communal and political.

…………..painting is harder than brain surgery.
