The Jung Center of Houston presents the exhibition Leslie Kell: Photographic Interpretations.  On view September 1 through September 28.

Leslie Kell's mirror-mad images exploit the color, texture, and patterns of the environmental elements she captures with her camera. The resulting vivid kaleidoscopic rhythms and patterns are intended to create a visual journey that offers a new experience at every turn.

Leslie Kell is an artist and designer whose career has spanned more than 20 years in the Austin area. Her clientele run the gamut from individual collectors to nationally known corporations. Leslie holds an art degree from East Texas State University and resides with her family in South Austin.

Her works can be found hanging in various venues and juried shows around the state.

    Artist Statement:

I am in hopes that my art offers a slightly different view of the world – I strive to create mirror-mad images that exploit the color, texture and patterns of the environmental elements I capture on my camera. The overall effect is a rhythmic, abstract design, which then gives way to another layer of imagery that offers a different set of visual experiences. The result is what I calls “wow moments” – kaleidoscopic mirrors that revolve around a portal to an abstract reality.

The process involves selecting images and manipulating them into a pattern and then rebuilding them into a representation of something else entirely. I begin with a simplified geometric drawing of something: an eye, letters, star or a pattern. Then I go to my photo folder, where I select images based on color, texture, subject matter or whatever moves me. Each piece may utilize six or more individual photos that I twist and turn and reflect into a composition. I enjoy working with the planes and layers, juxtaposing the ups and downs and ins and outs to create a beautiful mosaic.

When my work is going well I am filled with a sense of a joy ride. When people see the results of my efforts, I hope they can feel some of that same thrill.
