  Considered by some to be A.R. Gurney's best work, this comedy of manners has the manners but loses a lot of the comedy. Written about a crisis in a WASP family in Buffalo (much like Gurney's own), this production serves the narrative well but fails to find the heart - or the humor. Relaxing banter is played as bickering, making it difficult to like characters written as likable though with pretensions. The attractive matriarch is decades too young, and it's out-of-character, for her, who would never make her own martini, to sneak warm gin into her glass. She habitually looks dismissively away from the character being addressed, to face the audience - the director might have corrected this. It's almost as though the production didn't savor the way-of-life that Gurney celebrates while satirizing. Yet there is plot, some wit, and an interesting interplay of personalities by a dedicated cast. Despite flaws, it's well worth seeing this imperfect gem by a master of his craft. Collapse
