Hooks-Epstein Galleries is proud to present an exhibition of new works by Venezuelan sculptor, James Mathison. The exhibition will open on Saturday, March 26, 2011, with a reception for the artist from 6:00PM- 8:00PM.

James Mathison continues his work in displaying the male nude and transmitting silent feelings of loneliness, melancholy and mutation. The “power of dialogue” is to be found in that silence. Mathison is interested in a dialogue with certain artistic traditions such as those by Michelangelo, Rodin, Degas, Giacometti and Zitman. These traditions go back to external proposals on humanity: to be before man, before matter, transformed into an idea of mankind.

Although in his 2005 solo show, Observadores, he delineated from the anatomical studies of the male body; in this exhibition, he not only returns to the male body but he mutates them with lines of text. The engraved text appears to be “coming from the interior of the being.” Once again, the “power of dialogue” is coming out through their silence.

James Mathison lives and works in Caracas, Venezuela. He took courses at the St. Martin’s Institute of Arts in London, England. He is included in museum collections in Venezuela and the United States.

The exhibition continues through April 23, 2011.

Gallery hours are Tuesdays through Saturdays from 11:00AM to 5:00PM and by appointment.
