The Contemporary Arts Museum Houston and its Teen Council are pleased to present Perspectives 174: Re: Generation, a group exhibition of work by teenage artists from the Houston area. On view April 8 - June 26, 2011. Opening Reception Thursday, April 7, 2011, 6:30 - 9PM.

Organized by CAMH's Teen Council, the exhibition includes work in a variety of media including photography, painting, and sculpture. Houston-based artist Robert A. Pruitt served as guest juror and chose work from nearly 450 entries.

CAMH's Teen Council is comprised of eighteen individuals, ages fifteen to nineteen, employed by the Museum, who are committed to bringing the art of their time to their peers. They meet regularly to explore the arts and create youth-oriented programming and events. Every other year the Teen Council organizes a Perspectives exhibition, and selects the theme, title, and guest juror, and helps with the design, installation, printed exhibition catalogue, and programming. The 7th youth art exhibition organized by the Teen Council, Re: Generation highlights the breadth of talent of Houston's high-school aged artists.

"The title and loose theme of this year's Perspectives exhibition came out of conversations among Teen Council members about their experiences. What does being young, being here, and being now mean?" said Peter Lucas, Teen Council Coordinator. "Ramblings about creative texting, Facebook personas, and musical tastes gave way to talk about the overwhelming amount of access to information they have, the sense of distance and anonymity created by constant yet indirect communications, and the difficulty of self-definition in an era of eclectic influences."

Committed to presenting a diverse array of exhibitions and programs that exemplify the dynamic relationship between contemporary art and contemporary society, CAMH established the Teen Council in 1999, making it one of the first advisory groups of its kind in the country.

With programs like the Teen Fashion Show, Teen Music Fest, and the Pomegranate Film Festival, CAMH's Teen Council showcases young, emerging talent from many artistic fields--fashion design, music, and film--in addition to visual artists.

Perspectives 174: Re: Generation features a varied collection of images and expressions with photographic and mixed media works figuring largely. Artists in the exhibition include Lance Allison, Alexandria Alvarez, Mauria Faye Atzil, Ava Barrett, Cara Butler, Qindeel Butt, Mackenzie Clippard, Dezmond Colbert, Chris Colon, Avery Davidson, Justine Ditto, Amy Edwards, Temin Adelaide Eng, Wade Fitzhenry, Jessica Flores, Ashley Froberg, Kimberly Garcia, Luis Garza, Adriana Gonzales, Calhan Hale, Alyssa Hansen, Kristen Hanson, Casey Herrick, Gabriela Hurtado-Ramos, Lauren Januhowski, Elizabeth Jones, Rebecca Jones, Lee Koontz, Tram Le, Caitlin Lee, David Garrett Marsh, Gingi McGuire, Meagan Meeks, MacKenzie Mercurio, Ana Montross, Brittany Nichols, Riley Ogden, Estefhania Pineda, Faith Pruneda, Steven Rahbany, Sam Rhodes, Allen Robbins, Madeleine Sanchez, Will Schorre, Logan Gray Smith, Caitlyn Spillars, Nichole Taylor, Amy Troung, Jessica Vega, Valeria Villanueva, Earl Wescoat, and Loretta White.

Members of CAMH's Teen Council 2010/2011 are Sarah Andreeff, Sophie Asakura, Layla Bakhtiari, Ganna Boryshpol, Megan Ebel, Ciarán Finlayson, Klarissa Fitzpatrick, Chanelle Frazier, Julia Han, Juliana Jankowski, Abby Kvinge, Garrett Marsh, Rebecca Nuño, Colleen O'Connor, Kunal Pasrija, Grayson Scheiner, Megan Thomson, and Ruoxi Yu. Applications for next year's Teen Council are available online at www.camh.org.

    Performance: New Work by HSPVA
    Wednesday, May 4, 6-8PM
Visual art students from Houston's High School for the Performing and Visual Arts (HSPVA) will present original performance pieces in conjunction with Re: Generation.

HSPVA evolved in 1971 from a realization that gifted young artists need highly specialized and rigorous training in the arts to be prepared for the intense competition they will meet in colleges, conservatories, and the professional arts world. The creation of HSPVA represented the first attempt by any public high school in the nation to correlate an academic program with concentrated training in the arts. Ultimately HSPVA became the pilot program for today's magnet school concept.
