The Jewish Community Center of Houston will be the sight of the 3rd Annual Houston Family Triathlon Sunday, May 1 from 7:30 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.

The USA-Triathlon sanctioned event is the only family event with a race for every member of the family regardless of age. The event also features a team category allowing a parent and child to combine times to compete against other parent children teams. The triathlon is three events: swimming, biking and running.

The event is being organized by the JCC in conjunction with Tri Kids Camp, a non-profit organization founded in 2007 that encourages children ages 9-16 to live an active lifestyle by introducing them to triathlon training and competitions in a safe, healthy and fun environment.

Proceeds from the triathlon benefit the JCC Meals on Wheels program and Achieve Houston, a summer camp for inner city kids that teaches the sport of triathlon, as well as proper nutrition, strength and core training and making better life choices.

Open to all age groups, the 3rd Annual Houston Family Triathlon is a unique family experience. Parents can watch children race, then race themselves. Prizes will be awarded to the top three finishers in each youth division. By design, the competition will consist of a wide variety of athletes from beginners to elite.

“With the obesity epidemic on the rise, the 3rd Annual Houston Family Triathlon hopes to play a major role in fighting inactivity. The overall goal of this event is to promote physical fitness and health in our children,” said Charles Moser, event director and founder of Tri Kids Camp and Achieve Houston.

Families with children ages 9-16 from throughout the community are encouraged to register and participate. They will compete in one of three categories: 9-12 year olds, 13-16 year olds and 17 and up. The 9-12 year olds will compete in 200 meters swim, 5K bike and a 2K run. The 13-16 year olds will compete in 300 meters swim, 10K bike and a 4K run. Adults race a challenging 400 meter swim, a fast 15K bike ride and an entertaining neighborhood 6K run. All youth participants will receive a finisher’s medal, goodie bag, post race snack and a chance to win door prizes.
