In 1535, the first Spanish mint was established in Mexico City. The gold and silver exported from Mexico gave rise to the military power of Spain and paved the way for the establishment of an evangelical mission system and colonization plan in Spanish Texas.

James Bevill, author of The Paper Republic, will introduce us to Spanish kings, Father Hidalgo, Jean Lafitte, Santa Anna and a host of early revolutionaries as we follow the money of Colonial Texas. Jim Bevill will accompany the group into the Texas! exhibition to explore the display of coins and paper currency on display.
