From a quiet adagio mourning the loss of a great leader, to the roaring crescendo of a circus march, local residents will have the opportunity to experience a breadth of musical arrangements as the Baytown Concert Band (BCB) hosts its annual Spring Concert on Friday, April 29.

Offered as a credit course for Lee College students, the Baytown Concert Band is composed of both students and area residents and dedicated to the performance of music composed and arranged for winds and percussion. The band hosts two concerts each year.

“Our Spring Concert will provide a fresh mix of both the traditional and contemporary,” stated Ken Booker, Lee College director of Instrumental Music and BCB conductor. “Selections including Ronald Lo Presti’s Elegy for a Young American and Ralph Vaughan Williams’ Flourish for Wind Band will showcase the band’s fundamental strengths, while newer pieces will highlight our creativity.”

Additional favorites included in the program are Barnum and Bailey’s Favorite, a popular circus march by K.L. King, as well as Symphonic Dance #3 Fiesta by the late Texas composer Clifton Williams.

Among the new selections to be performed are two excerpts from Booker’s latest work-in-progress, entitled Tolkien Scenes. Inspired by the writings of J.R.R. Tolkien, Tolkien Scenes blends rhythms, textures and emotions as it explores the thematic elements of the author’s work.

The Baytown Concert Band’s Spring Concert will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, April 29, in the Lee College Performing Arts Center; admission is free.
