The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston presents a MFAH Friday-Saturday Lecture: Titian, The First Modern Painter,  Friday, May 13, 1:30 pm (repeated on Saturday, May 14, 4 pm). Presented by Ian Kennedy, Louis L. and Adelaide C. Ward Curator of European Painting and Sculpture, the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City.

In his own day, Titian was regarded as an artistic miracle worker, his paintings perceived as depicting reality and humanity with unprecedented vividness and vitality. Titian is indeed Shakespearean, a universal artist who is fascinating on a variety of levels: emotional, social, aesthetic, and even political.

Ian Kennedy offers an overview of Titian’s career and achievements by examining a selection of 16th-century master's finest works to show why today's audience should be looking at Titian with as much close attention, reverence, and astonishment as the artist's contemporaries did half a millennium ago.

The four-week series of May Friday and Saturday Afternoon Lectures explores the art and legacy of Titian (c. 1488/90–1576), an artist renowned even in his own lifetime as the most gifted and influential painter of the Venetian school.

In conjunction with the MFAH exhibition Titian and the Golden Age of Venetian Painting: Masterpieces from the National Galleries of Scotland.

Pictured:  Titian, detail The Virgin and Child with Saint John the Baptist and an Unidentified Saint, c. 1515–20, oil on canvas.
