The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston presents a MFAH Friday-Saturday Lecture: How Titian Came to Scotland - A Colorful Journey,  Friday, May 20, 1:30 pm (repeated on Saturday, May 21, 4 pm). Presented by Michael Clarke CBE, Director, National Gallery of Scotland.

Titian’s Diana and Actaeon and Diana and Callisto have been among the chief glories on view at the National Gallery of Scotland since 1945. Painted in the 1550s for King Philip II of Spain, they were in Paris throughout most of the 18th century, but then were sold on the international art market in the wake of the French Revolution and acquired by the Duke of Bridgewater.

In this richly illustrated lecture, Michael Clarke traces the fascinating story of how these great masterpieces found their way from the warmth and splendor of Venice to the bracing air of Scotland’s ancient capital city of Edinburgh.

The four-week series of May Friday and Saturday Afternoon Lectures explores the art and legacy of Titian (c. 1488/90–1576), an artist renowned even in his own lifetime as the most gifted and influential painter of the Venetian school.

In conjunction with the MFAH exhibition Titian and the Golden Age of Venetian Painting: Masterpieces from the National Galleries of Scotland.
