The Houston Symphony League hosts the 2011 Ima Hogg Young Artist Competition Thursday, June 2 and Saturday, June 4. The Houston Symphony League’s Ima Hogg Competition is an annual event allowing rising musicians the chance to compete in a concerto alongside the Houston Symphony.

Applicants are narrowed down to four finalist positions that compete for cash prizes and future performance opportunities with the Houston Symphony. The Semifinals is on June 2 and the Finals competition is on June 4 beginning at 7 PM at Rice University’s Stude Concert Hall.

Named to honor the memory of Miss Hogg, a co-founder of the Houston Symphony, this prestigious Competition is open to young musicians between the ages of 16 and 29 who play standard orchestral instruments or piano. Through the support of the Houston Symphony League, the Competition provides performance opportunities for aspiring musicians ages 16-29.

The 2011 semifinal round will take place on Thursday, June 2 at Stude Concert Hall at the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University. Ten semifinalists will perform two concertos with piano accompaniment. At the conclusion of the semifinals, four finalists will be selected to perform one concerto with the Houston Symphony at the Finals Concert on Saturday, June 4.  The first place winner will then perform with the Houston Symphony at the Houston Chronicle Dollar Concert on July 9; second place will perform with the orchestra at Miller Theatre on June 25.
