The Summer 2011 Dance Gathering is intended to be an all-encompassing, community dance performance event, open to choreographers at every level of skill and experience, beginning to advanced, emerging to professional.

The objective of The Dance Gathering is to come together several times a year as a community and to celebrate the diversity of choreographic talent and perspectives here in Houston. Each Dance Gathering is an approximately 90-minute performance featuring only short works (up to 4 minutes each) by as many as 20 different choreographers, representing a wide variety of dance genres.

The environment is non-competitive, one where choreographers at different stages of experience can enjoy a very low-cost opportunity to show a new choreographic work, see a sampling of many other choreographers’ work, socialize with one another as dance professionals and enthusiasts, and encourage younger, emerging contemporary dance choreographers to keep creating original, inventive work right here in Houston. It is designed to be a fun, pleasant, and rewarding experience for all involved.

The Dance Gathering is held three times a year at Barnevelder: fall, spring, and summer. The Summer 2011 Dance Gathering performance will be held on Sunday, June 5, 2011 at 7:00 pm.

Sixteen 4-minute surprises this Sunday (UPDATE June 3, 2011):

Raw and uncurated. From gentle and lyrical to ferocious and percussive, from soloists to ensembles, this event is purposed to showcase the diversity of the Houston dance community, providing a stage for exploration and experimentation. This Sunday, June 5 at 7:00 pm at Barnevelder is The Dance Gathering, a fast-paced evening of 16 choreographic works, each 4 minutes or under, presented by these local and regional choreographers:

Carisa Armstrong, Diane Cahill Bedford, Teresa Chapman, Rebekah Chappell, Darren Cherry, Brooke Doyle, Theodesia Drummer, Amanda Feenstra, Heidi Karel Erickson, Maggie Lasher, Katie McMann, Tina Mullone, Jacqueline Nalett, Jessalyn Pratka, Reagon Elise Rucker, Toni Leago Valle
