Discovery Green and Houston Arts Alliance present HAA Folklife & Traditional Arts Program at Discovery Green Local Roots/Global Culture Showcase.

    Schedule of Performances:

    Monday, May 23
Noon: Song of Houston, HGOco’s amazing project combining operatic settings with local song traditions to tell the stories of the city’s diverse communities.

1:00pm: Texas Johnny Brown, this Houston blues man extraordinaire is responsible for most of the tasteful licks heard on recordings for the venerable Duke/Peacock record label in the 1950s and 60s. Still going strong, TJB is truly a legend.

6:00pm: Miss Leslie and her Juke-Jointers, this gal delivers straight-ahead Texas honky tonk in the Houston style, crafting songs and covering standards that reflect the heart break and heavy lifting of contemporary life.

7:00pm: Endurance, this powerhouse ensemble from the Houston gospel quartet scene is relatively young by standards of the style, but these Stella-nominated artists are strictly old school. Joined by Garifuna musicians from a local Pentecostal congregation, this combo makes for a global gospel extravanganza.

    Tuesday, May 24
Noon: Rajarajeshwary Bhat, (pictured) this third generation musician is a noted teacher and internationally acclaimed performer of the Carnatic tradition of Southern India who now makes Houston her home.

1:00pm: Umbrella Man, a truly Houston combo made up of homegrown musicians who are forging a new Gulf Coast sound by mixing the zydeco, conjunto and hard core country traditions that find a home in the Bayou City.

6:00pm: Mariachi Imperial, three generations of musicians performing over three decades, this venerable ensemble of Houstonians performs a classic repertoire from the Mexican tradition.

7:00pm: Hustlers Brass Band, this crew of jazzy, funky first-liners have mostly come to Houston via New Orleans — some before, and some because of, Hurricane Katrina. Their music more than demonstrates that that horrific storm blew some great things into this city.
