Beginning July15, Spacetaker will host Meaning in Motion: Travelling Into Self Reflection, a solo exhibition by Houston artist Pablo Gimenez Zapiola, as part of its ARC Exhibition Series.

Through large-scale projections of words, literary passages and poems onto moving trains as well as from a moving car onto the environment (houses, trees, buildings, fences, freeways, etc.), Gimenez Zapiola investigates how different environments and contexts affect the projected words, and how the projected words affect the environments. Capturing each projection on video and photography, the long exposure used results in transparency, multiplicity, and fragmentation of the words as they adopt the fast changing shapes of the projected surfaces. Meaning in Motion is an art project that proposes an open-ended dialogue between image and viewer through motion, language, color, and form. The exhibition will feature video, still photos and animations, from some of the most interesting projections the artist has captured over the past two years.

    Meaning in Motion
will open with a public reception on Friday, July 15 from 7 to 10 p.m. during which guests may witness Gimenez Zapiola’s live “performance” of projections onto the passing trains on the tracks next to Spacetaker’s gallery in Winter Street Studios. In conjunction with this exhibit, the artist will host a series of live projection performances where the public is invited to come out and wait for trains to pass by the studio to see the artist’s work in action. Gimenez Zapiola’s live projection performances are made possible by an Individual Artist Grant from the Houston Arts Alliance. The exhibition will be on view at Spacetaker’s ARC Gallery through August 13, 2011 and is free and open to the public.

Live train projection performances will take place on:
    Friday, July 15 from 8:30 – 10:30pm
