    Exploring the Mind Through Music 2011

    Rice University - Shepherd School of Music has invited over thirty music and science fellows for Exploring the Mind Through Music 2011, a four-day Conference on music and the mind.

    The mornings feature innovative cross-disciplinary seminars: The science fellows will study music theory and history while the music fellows will learn about brain morphology, music perception and experimental design...

    Rice University - Shepherd School of Music has invited over thirty music and science fellows for Exploring the Mind Through Music 2011, a four-day Conference on music and the mind.

    The mornings feature innovative cross-disciplinary seminars: The science fellows will study music theory and history while the music fellows will learn about brain morphology, music perception and experimental design The afternoons and evenings include presentations by distinguished visiting and resident faculty on the frontiers of current research.

    The Conference fellows come to Rice from the Chinese Republic, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Great Britain, Israel, Sweden and leading institutions throughout the United States. The goal of the Conference is to promote collaboration between musicians and scientists and spur research, as well as increase public interest in this exciting emerging discipline.

    Tickets:

    Many events are free and open to the public: Please consult our Schedule for full Conference details.No registration or advance reservations are required for the public events. Seating will be on first-come, first-served basis. The morning seminars may be audited by members of the Rice and Baylor communities.

    We present our Conference's first public event in memory of Frank R. Yekovich; an accomplished scientist, a passionate researcher in memory and cognition and lover of music.

    Wednesday, June 15th:

    Norman Fischer: “Musician, Athlete, Performer: Incorporating Mental Procedures to Train the Advanced Player”

    Fred Lerdahl: “Linguistic and Musical Syntax”

    Thursday, June 16th

    David Eagleman: “Music and neuroscience: Insights from time perception and synesthesia”
    Casey O’Callaghan: "Crossmodal perception in the arts"

    7:00 - 10:00 p.m.: Fellows Night
    The Shepherd School conference includes over 30 international music and science fellows. A group of fellows will give brief presentations on their research.
