American Institute of Architects (AIA Houston)/Architecture Center Houston presents the exhibition Paul Hester: Doing Time in Houston 1966 – 2011. Exhibition Dates July 7 through August 12. Opening Reception July 7,  5:30 - 7:00pm.

Doing Time in Houston features the photography of Paul Hester, AIA Houston 2010 Artist of the Year and recipient of Texas Society of Architects’ 2010 John G. Flowers Award. Through comparison, collaboration, and juxtaposition Hester examines the evolving landscape of Houston as well as his photography over the past 45 years.

“Visual descriptions of a place tell a story about the way things look at a specific time. Collections of juxtaposed comparisons tell a story of the passage of time and changing values. With persistence and a little luck, the opportunity to contribute to these stories can add to our understanding of what came before us and where we are now.” – Paul Hester

Paul Hester teaches in the Department of Visual and Dramatic Arts at Rice University. He is a graduate of the Rice School of Architecture and the Rhode Island School of Design. Since 1966, Hester has lived, studied, and worked mostly in Houston. His father’s experience as a minister overseeing the construction of new churches as well as a summer job as a construction worker influenced his decision to study architecture and his experience working with Edward Mayo at the MFAH, Curtis Bean of the Houston Metropolitan Research Center, Douglas Milburn, and William T. Cannady all helped shape his career as a photographer and artist.

Paul Hester: Doing Time in Houston 1966 – 2011 will coincide with the 2011 AIA Houston Design Awards Exhibition at ArCH.
