The 2004 International Champion Gilbert & Sullivan Society of Houston proudly presents The Mikado – the masterpiece of classic English comic opera from the clever pens of W.S. Gilbert and Sir Arthur Sullivan, creators of The Pirates of Penzance and HMS Pinafore. The Mikado – 60th Summer of G&S in Houston!

Join us for six performances of this audience favorite as we continue our 30-year association with internationally-acclaimed British actor Alistair Donkin as our stage director and star (as Ko-Ko the Lord High Executioner). Dr. Brian Runnels, returns for his fourth season as the Society’s Music Director.

The Mikado or The Town of Titipu was first performed in London in 1885. It was so enormously popular that before the end of the year, at least 150 different companies were performing the comic opera. The Mikado remains to this day one of the most popular musical theater pieces of all time. Despite the exotic setting of the story in Japan, however, W. S. Gilbert was really doing what he always did--making fun of the foibles of his own Victorian England.
