Generations, A Theatre Company presents Art, by Yasmina Reza. Translation by Christopher Hampton. Running July 15-31, Thursdays through Sundays, in Hamman Hall on the campus of Rice University.

Generation’s 2011 season features the U.S. regional premiere of the Tony-Award-winning musical Spring Awakening, in rotating rep with Yasmina Reza’s bold comedy Art. Both plays are regarded as groundbreaking works that take audiences to new places in new and exciting ways.

Art caused quite a sensation when it won the Tony for Best Play in 1998. Playwright Yasmina Reza (God of Carnage) asks not only “What is art?” but also “What is friendship?” and “What is marriage?” The answers will make you laugh and maybe even make you gasp.

Spring Awakening is directed by Generations Artistic Director George Brock, winner of multiple Tommy Tune Awards in his role as Theatre Teacher and Director at Episcopal High School in Houston. Phillip Lehl, co-founder of Stark Naked Theatre Company and one of Houston’s most versatile actors, directs Art.

The characters are marvelously well-acted and so recognizable that I loved them in spite of (because of?) their annoyances/eccentricities (just like we all do with our real friends, eh?). The dialog... Expand

The characters are marvelously well-acted and so recognizable that I loved them in spite of (because of?) their annoyances/eccentricities (just like we all do with our real friends, eh?). The dialog kept me entertained for all 90 minutes; it did so also for people attending with me who were not particularly interested in art. We could not stop talking and laughing about the play afterward: what make friendships work, and ironically, about the art itself. Usually I don't like plays/movies that purport to make me "think" because they are such downers; when I left this I was still in really good humor and thinking about it a ton. If you are lucky enough to have the kind of friends (/family) who know you well and love you anyway, who challenge you and laugh with you, take them immediately to see this play, then enjoy a meal/drink in the Village (next to Rice campus) afterward, because you will feel like celebrating your friendship all over again.
