Window into Houston - Patrick Renner: Binocular Vision

In spring 2011, Blaffer debuted its new exhibition series, Window into Houston, at 110 Milam Street in downtown Houston. Window into Houston is dedicated to showcasing the work of Houston artists in a unique and highly public setting that allows for focused two-part installation in the windows of a historic building located near the University of Houston-Downtown and Market Square.

The second installment of the series continues with Patrick Renner. For his installation, Renner collaborated with high school students enrolled in the summer edition of Blaffer's award-winning Young Artist Apprenticeship Program. Together, they created a work that explores the critical function of binocular vision in visual art. In the artist's own words, he turned "the pair of windows into oculi that have the dual role of focusing viewership on the architecture and becoming the eyes of the building." The eyes incorporate collage, sculpture, lights and kinetic movement that is triggered when passers-by put their hands on the glass.

The exhibition is on view at 110 Milam Street from June 29 through September 28, 2011. The public is invited to an opening reception on Wednesday, June 29, from 8 until 10 p.m.; scheduled later than most Blaffer openings due to daytime heat. Admission is free, and complimentary drinks and hors d'oeuvres will be provided.

Renner is no stranger to collaborating with high school students. He recently worked with his students at the Sharpstown International Grades 6-12 School on an art car entitled "losing the mammoth!" Their car won the grand prize award -- the Mayor's Cup -- at the 2011 Houston Art Car Parade. Renner's involvement with Blaffer dates back to 2008, when he joined as an artist-mentor for YAAP. He has also led the museum's highly popular Summer Arts program. He holds an MFA from Alfred University and a BFA from the Kansas City Art Institute.
