Each month Aurora Picture Show hosts a free educational Video Salon with a visiting curator and/or artist at the Aurora Video Library. Aurora is proud to generate meaningful discussions that provide context and encourage media literacy. Sunday, September 25 Aurora presents DESIGN+FILM: Splitting the Screen: Aurora Video Salon with Peter Lucas.

The second installment in this series exploring intersections of design and film focuses on the emergence of split-screen techniques in films of the 1960s. In this one-hour Video Salon, curator Peter Lucas will show examples and discuss influential works including multiple-screen World’s Fair films by Charles and Ray Eames and split-screen film sequences by Saul Bass and Pablo Ferro. In the 60s, new split-screen techniques brought graphic design dynamics to the screen and expanded the cinematic language by enabling the compression of time and incorporation of different simultaneous images and perspectives. This talk explores artful films and sequences at the roots of a media language now common and taken for granted in today’s visual culture.

Peter Lucas is currently Education Associate with the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston and Curator of the ByDesign festival in Seattle. Peter has worked as a Film Programmer with Northwest Film Forum, Seattle International Film Festival, and Experience Music Project. With a particular interest in exploring various intersections of music, visual art, and design with moving image media, he has presented programs and talks at Cornish College of the Arts, School of Visual Concepts, Sound Unseen Film and Music Festival, Alamo Drafthouse Cinema, and Aurora Picture Show.
