The Country Playhouse (voted through Houston Community Newspapers as Best Community Theatre of 2010) and Talento Bilingüe de Houston proudly present Anna in the Tropics by Nilo Cruz. This co-production will run from September 16 to October 1, 2011 on the Cerwinske Stage at the Country Playhouse and from October 7 to 16 at Talento Bilingüe de Houston with Pedro Garcia directing.

This poignant picture of a 1920’s era Cuban-American cigar-making community in Tampa captured the heart of Broadway in 2003,.

Amid rooster fights and romance, Anna tells the story of a handsome lector who arrives at the cigar factory from Cuba, hired specifically to read to the workers as they cut, roll, and pack cigars. The novel he selects is Tolstoy’s Anna Karenina, which proves to be quite an education for those within an earshot.

Hailed as “poetic and passionate, enticing and exotic,” Nilo Cruz’s story will stay in you long after the applause dies down.

The play is directed by Peter García and cast includes John Carmona, Sayra Contreras, Jorge Díaz, Sergio Flores, Lidia Porto, Cynthia Leal, Lidia Porto, Ivette Román and Luis Suárez.

Winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, 2003
Nominated for a Tony Award for Best Play, 2005

*Please note: Due to some of the adult situations in the production, this show may not be suitable for young children. Also for those with allergies, some cigar smoke is used as a part of this production.
