Houston Family Arts Center (HFAC) announces the World Premiere of Death by Design, commissioned by HFAC, and written by acclaimed New York playwright Rob Urbinati. Directed by Lisa Garza. Death by Design opens September 9 and runs through September 25, 2011, on the HFAC Garza Main Stage.

“One of the goals of HFAC is to produce original works,” said Bob Clark, HFAC Executive Director. “We’re excited to open our 2011-2012 season with the World Premiere of this uproarious comedy.”

What happens when you mix Noel Coward and a touch of Agatha Christie in an English country manor in 1932? A hilarious murder with multiple suspects! Fortunately, house maid Bridget is more than up to the task of finding out whodunit.

“I’ve always admired the work of Agatha Christie and Noel Coward,” Rob Urbinati said. “But like most people, I never associated these two writers. Although the differences between the two writers are evident – Christie’s writing is virtually all plot, and while there is a gentle humor in some of her work, setting up her suspects takes priority. Coward’s work is the opposite – his work is sustained by sheer wit. His work is uproarious, and her work is mysterious. Her novels and plays are clever, involving puzzles, and his short stories and plays are delightful, sophisticated entertainments.”

Urbinati concludes, “My desire in Death by Design was to combine Coward’s brilliant wit with Christie’s surprising plots, and create a work that reflected the best of both writers’ sensibilities. My sincere hope is that this comedy not only honors what I admire about these two legendary writers, but will extend and expand their styles in this original work that reflects my own taste and sensibility.”

In addition to Lisa Garza, the creative team includes Elaine Edstrom as Assistant Director and Dialect Coach, Ben Mason scenic design, and Tracy Clayton sound design. The talented cast of local Houston actors includes Kathy Drum as Bridgit, Patrick Barton as Edward, Julie Fontenot as Sorel, Matt Elliott as Jack, Joshua Clark as Eric, J. Blanchard as Walter, Hannah McKinney as Victoria, and Chaney Moore as Alice.
