The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston presents a MFAH Special Lecture -  Collecting for the 21st Century: contemporary@mfah, Tuesday, September 27, 2011 at 6:30 PM at the Caroline Wiess Law Building. Presented by John B. Ravenal, (pictured) Sydney and Frances Lewis Family Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art, Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. This lecture launches the fall season of contemporary@mfah, the newest MFAH patron group.

The past decade at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, has been one of unparalleled collection growth, with particular emphasis on contemporary art. As the MFAH board and staff take the next steps to realize a new building dedicated to art after 1900, the question of how a museum should collect for the 21st century is now a more-pressing question than ever.

John B. Ravenal, curator at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, addresses this topic in the context of the VMFA’s award-winning 2010 expansion, touted by the Wall Street Journal: “The museum’s ‘wow’ spaces are created notby flashy architecture but by exceptional collections. . . . Virginia is for art lovers!”

Exploring both new media and traditional forms from local studios and across world cultures, Ravenal brings to the VMFA galleries an uncompromising eye for excellence and a sense of adventure. In this illustrated lecture, he also discusses how the VMFA’s engagement with contemporary art continues to shape its future.
