Houston Chamber Choir and River Oaks Chamber Orchestra present the world premiere of Messiah for Kids! composed by Karim Al-Zand, a renowned composer and member of the faculty at The Shepherd School of Music, Rice University.  Messiah for Kids! will be performed at 11 a.m. on Saturday, December 3 at The Church of St. John the Divine, 2450 River Oaks Boulevard, Houston, 77019.

    G. F. Handel’s Messiah: The Pre-Game Show was created especially for young audiences, and brings a fresh perspective to this holiday favorite.

Composer Karim Al-Zand created this new work to take kids inside the piece and show them how the words and music are connected. Actor Rutherford “Ruddy” Cravens portrays composer George Frideric Handel in a post-game format that breaks down the Messiah. In this show, you’ll get a behind the scenes look at this unique match-up of choir and orchestra. In a pre-game press conference, George Frideric Handel himself will introduce the team, make the big calls, and provide a play-by-play analysis of his Messiah. Through musical demonstrations, audience participation, and lively interaction, this version of the Messiah brings Handel’s music to life in a way that is both accessible and entertaining for young audiences.

This new classic will both engage and delight young audiences (recommended for ages 5 and up) and adults.

Note: There will also be an evening performance of Handel’s Messiah and Schubert’s Magnificat.
