Get Cultured, the Jewish Community Center’s arts and culture programming for young professionals, is teaming with Multicultural Education & Counseling through the Arts (MECA) and the Center for the Healing of Racism (CFHR) to present The People’s Art Collaborative, an evening of communal art-making, Saturday, August 27 at 7 p.m. at MECA, 1900 Kane St.

People ages 21-35 from around Houston are invited to attend the event, which will entail three rooms, each with a different art-making activity. The first room will feature a charcoal mural, etched by many attendees at once, while the second room features dozens of canvasses, each with its own thematic prompt. The third room will encourage small groups to work together on juxtaposing art pieces. Wine provided by Lasco Enterprises, hors d’oeuvres, and evocative music will set the mood for a creative atmosphere.

The goal is to bring people together who would ordinarily never meet due to location of residence, cultural or religious upbringing, or socioeconomic position.

“In creating collaborative art, you’re building a shared experience with someone who was a stranger just minutes before,” said Get Cultured Director Ariela Emery. “At the same time, since the artistic process requires you to tap into the subconscious, you’re also unknowingly breaking down some of those barriers standing between you and who you perceive as the other.”
