Houston Friends of Chamber Music presents the New York Woodwind Quintet, Tuesday, January 17, 2012.

One of the oldest continuously active chamber ensembles in the country, the New York Woodwind Quintet, now in its seventh decade, continues to maintain an active concert presence around the world. The Quintet has commissioned and premiered numerous compositions, some of which have become classics of the woodwind repertoire. Its members are actively involved with teaching and mentoring the next generation of woodwind performers. The Quintet continues its fifteen-year residency at The Julliard School.

Flutist, Carol Wincenc, has collaborated with the Emerson, Tokyo, Cleveland and Guarneri string quartets. First Prize winner of the Naumburg Solo Flute competition, she has been a member of the faculty at The Julliard School for seventeen years.

Stephen Taylor, oboist, performs with numerous organizations and orchestras, including the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center and the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra. A graduate of The Julliard School, he teaches there as well as at Yale, SUNY Stony Brook and the Manhattan School of Music.

Clarinetist, Charles Neidich, performs with leading ensembles, and also serves as composer and conductor with the San Diego Symphony. He is on the faculty of The Julliard School, the Manhattan School and the Mannes College of Music.

Marc Goldberg, bassoonist and newest member of the Quintet, has been a guest of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center. He also has collaborated with the Brentano Quartet and has performed for Houston's Da Camera Society.

William Purvis appeared as a soloist with the Pittsburg Symphony when he as eighteen years old. A French horn soloist, conductor and educator, he is on the faculty of the Yale School of Music.

The Quintet last performed for our audience in 1963. We look forward to their long overdue return.
