First Saturday Arts Market Saturday, September 3, returns to 11am-8pm hours, on the parking lot of Wind Water Gallery at 548 W. 19th St. at Lawrence St. Several dozen artists showcase their paintings, sculpture, photography, jewelry and handmade wares in as many white canopied tents.

When founded in March 2004, First Saturday Arts Market was located on an unused lot behind the Kaplans-Ben Hur Department store. That was at Yale St. and 21st. After finally establishing name recognition the market was forced to move when Kaplans closed after 85 years. Now located just two blocks south on 19th St., the market was renamed for the date it occurs rather than location: First Saturday Arts Market.

Seven years later, First Saturday Arts Market continues as a monthly outdoor fine arts event that takes place on the parking lot of Wind Water Gallery at 548 W. 19th St. at Lawrence St.  Each month up to fifty artists showcase their paintings, sculpture, photography, jewelry and handmade wares in as many white canopied tents. Local musicians entertain and nonprofits from across Houston vie for the free spot up front to highlight their causes. The market is open year round on the first Saturday of each month, and a big part of the Heights events like White Linen Night in the Heights and Heights Mistletoe Madness.
