    CASTLE OF PURITY is the story of a disciplined and sexually driven man who keeps his family isolated in his home for years to protect them from the "evil nature" of human beings while inventing (with his wife) rat poison.

    BEGINNING AND END (Principio y fin)
    Arturo Ripstein to host a Q & A session following the film.
    BEGINNING AND END: The film tells the story of the Boteros, a middle-class Mexican family struggling against poverty after their father's death. Ignacia (Egurrola) is the Boteros mother, a desperate woman who chooses to sacrifice the destiny of her three older children, in order to protect Gabriel (Laguardia) the youngest one. She believes Gabriel will climb the social structure and bring back the lost fortune to the family. But destiny has other plans for the Boteros and tragedy will overcome eventually. Based on the novel of Nobel Prize winner Naguib Mahfouz.

    DEEP CRIMSON (Profundo carmesi) screened with CRAZY CARNIVAL (El Carnival de Sodoma) DOUBLE FEATURE.
    DEEP CRIMSON at 3:00 p.m.: The life of a man who preys on unsuspecting women for a living is changed when he finds an accomplice in the woman who loves and controls him.

    CRAZY CARNIVAL at 5:00 p.m.: Residents of a bordello scurry to put together their outfits for an annual carnival. 

    Mexican Film Series - An Arturo Ripstein Retrospective Sponsored by the Department of Hispanic Studies, Rice University’s Community Relations in the Office of Public Affairs, Mexican Consulate, and Rice Cinema in the Department of Visual and Dramatic Arts.
