The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston presents a MFAH Special Lecture -  Queen Victoria and Prince Albert: Patrons of the Arts; Art Collectors; Artists, Thursday, Oct 06, 2011, 6:30 PM - 7:30 PM. FREE. Presented by Oliver Everett, (pictured) librarian emeritus of the Royal Library, Windsor Castle, Author of the official guide to Windsor Castle. Former Assistant Private Secretary to Prince Charles, Prince of Wales. Former Private Secretary to Diana, Princess of Wales.

Queen Victoria and Prince Albert were as passionate about art as they were about each other, earning Buckingham Palace the moniker "the headquarters of taste.” Enthusiastic patrons of the arts throughout their marriage, Victoria and Albert viewed this responsibility as an integral part of the public duties of the monarchy. They acquired or commissioned paintings, sculpture, furniture, jewelry, and fine bindings by both British and European artists, and they were important early patrons of photography. Victoria and Albert were also artists themselves, producing paintings, drawings, and etchings.

The couple played a pivotal role in the groundbreaking Great Exhibition of 1851 in London’s Hyde Park, the first in a popular series of 19th-century World’s Fair exhibitions devoted to culture and industry. Victoria and Albert also made important changes at Windsor Castle and added three other distinctive royal residences: Balmoral Castle, Osborne House, and Sandringham House.

In this illustrated talk, Oliver Everett challenges the popular image of Victoria as a melancholy widow and reveals her to be a passionate and open-minded woman. A reception follows.
