The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston presents a MFAH Friday-Saturday Lecture: Edens of Excess: Gardens of Eighteenth-Century Paris, Friday, October 14, 1:30 pm (repeated on Saturday, October 15, 4 pm).  Presented by Dr. Eric T. Haskell, (pictured) professor of French studies and humanities, and director, Clark Humanities Museum, Scripps College, in conjunction with the exhibition Life & Luxury: The Art of Living in Eighteenth-Century Paris.

A cornucopia of treasures from around the globe and across human history heads to the MFAH this fall. To complement this extraordinary season of exhibitions, the Fall 2011 Friday and Saturday Afternoon Lectures will explore our enduring fascination with King Tutankhamun, the boy pharaoh; the exquisite cultural legacy of the sultans of the Islamic world; the unique circumstances that created the golden age of Rembrandt, Frans Hals, and other still-revered Dutch and Flemish masters; the art of the ‘luxe life’ in eighteenth-century Paris; the only recently discovered contributions of Czech artists to early modernism; the sacred in Tibetan art; and why centuries-old techniques continue to inspire contemporary artists.
