New York-based, Swiss-born artist Katja Loher, one of her generation’s most innovative video artists, returns to Anya Tish Gallery for her second solo exhibition, Multiverse. The Artist Reception will be held on October 14, 2011 from 6 - 8:30 PM.

In her work, Loher abandons traditional screens for video projections and, instead, creates spatial video objects by incorporating sculpture with the video images. This is done by encasing video in hand-blown glass sculptures, called ‘Bubbles’, as well as projecting video onto the surfaces of suspended weather balloons, which she calls ‘Videoplanets’.

What makes Loher’s work unique is not only her addition of a sculptural element, but also the massive, intricate details she incorporates into the videos themselves. Each video is created in collaboration with a composer, a costume designer, a choreographer and dancers along with Loher’s post-production additions. The works explore the complex relationship between humanity and nature, where multiplication and kaleidoscopic movements of bodies in changing constellations suggest that only collective effort can preserve our planet and prevent ecological disaster.

Katja Loher has had solo exhibitions in the United States, Israel, Italy, Switzerland, Singapore, China, Argentina and the Czech Republic, among others (Six solo exhibitions around the world in just this year, 2011). In 2010, Loher’s work was included in the inaugural exhibition of the MAXXI Museum in Rome, 'NETinSPACE MAXXI'. In November 2011, Loher’s most recent work will be presented in a solo exhibition at the Museu Brasilerio da Escultura in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Loher has been the recipient of several awards and grants and is featured in many collections such as the Galleria Comunale d’Arte Contemporanea of Monfalcone, Italy, the Horsecross Collection in Perth, United Kingdom, and the eN Arts Collection in Tokyo, Japan.
