The Menil Collection presents a Panel Discussion:  Byzantine and Russian Icos at The Menil Collection, Friday, October 21st, 7:00 pm.

The museum’s collection of Russian and Byzantine icons is widely regarded as one of the most important in America. Thirty of those icons—and related metal objects—spanning the sixth to the eighteenth centuries, have been chosen for the exhibition Imprinting the Divine.

A panel of scholars led by Menil Assistant Curator Clare Elliott, will explain how icons—meant to serve believers as conduits to the sacred—were intended to be “read.” The panel will also recount the formation of the museum’s collection.

The panelists are: exhibition curator Annemarie Weyl Carr, Professor Emeritus, Southern Methodist University, Dallas; Bertrand Davezac, Medievalist and former Menil Chief Curator; and Charles A. Stewart, Assistant Professor of Art History, University of St. Thomas, Houston.
