Hooks-Epstein Galleries is proud to present Cautionary Tales from the Recent Past, an exhibition of assemblage by Ward Sanders. The exhibition will open on Saturday, October 22, 2011, with a reception for the artist from 6:00PM-8:00PM.

In Cautionary Tales from the Recent Past, Ward Sanders explores the term of “Deep Time”. “Deep Time” was coined by distinguished journalist, John McPhee, to describe intervals of time, incomprehensibly, greater than our daily experience. John McPhee states, “Consider the Earth’s history as the old measure of the English yard, the distance from the King’s nose to the tip of his outstretched hand. One stroke of a nail file on his middle finger erases human history.”

Cautionary Tales from the Recent Past suggests that we seek meaningful journeys, be they ever so short. In “Deep Time”, our lives and deaths meld into almost instant annihilation and should we last another ten thousand years, it would hardly be annihilation plus one. Sanders states, “If existential tension can be a subject, it is the heart of each of these boxes, cautionary tales from the relic and photo-fossil remains of lives past.”

Ward Sanders has constructed boxes of different sizes and places instruments and objects within them. He feels his objects symbolize access to the unknown, sometimes an unknown that can only be found through the creative process.

This will be Ward Sanders’ 4th solo show with Hooks-Epstein Galleries and has also been in several group exhibitions. Ward Sanders work is also in numerous private collections.

The exhibition continues through November 23, 2011.
