In honor of its 50th Anniversary, NCM Fathom and Turner Classic Movies are bringing West Side Story back to the big screen for a one night event in movie theaters nationwide! This extraordinary event includes an exciting new Turner Classic Movies original production followed by MGM’s 50th Anniversary restoration of West Side Story—the most acclaimed musical of all time (winner of 10 Academy Awards®, including Best Picture). This is an unprecedented opportunity to enjoy every sensational song and dazzling dance number on the big screen once again. Turner Classic Movies Presents West Side Story 50th Anniversary Event comes to select movie theaters on Wednesday, November 9 at 7:00pm (local time).

Set in New York City in the mid-1950s, the musical explores the rivalry between the Jets and the Sharks, two teenage street gangs of different ethnic backgrounds. The members of the Sharks from Puerto Rico are taunted by the Jets, a white working-class group. The young protagonist, Tony, one of the Jets, falls in love with Maria, the sister of Bernardo, the leader of the Sharks.

The dark theme, sophisticated music, extended dance scenes, and focus on social problems marked a turning point in American musical theatre. Bernstein's score for the musical has become extremely popular; it includes "Something's Coming", "Maria", "America", "Somewhere", "Tonight", "Jet Song", "I Feel Pretty", "A Boy Like That", "One Hand, One Heart", "Gee, Officer Krupke" and "Cool".

West Side Story is a 1961 musical masterpiece directed by Robert Wise and Jerome Robbins. It is an adaptation of the 1957 Broadway musical of the same name, which in turn was adapted from William Shakespeare's play Romeo and Juliet. It stars Natalie Wood, Richard Beymer, Russ Tamblyn, Rita Moreno, George Chakiris and David Winters, and it was photographed by Daniel L. Fapp, A.S.C., in Super Panavision 70.

West Side Story was released on October 18, 1961, through United Artists. It received praise from critics and the public, and became the second highest grossing studio product of the year in the United States. It won ten Academy Awards in its eleven nominated categories, including Best Picture, as well as a special award for Robbins. West Side Story holds the distinction of having won more Academy Award than any other musical. The soundtrack album made more money than any other album before it.
