The Graphic Arts of Hans Erni

The Museum of Printing History  presents the exhibition The Graphic Arts of Hans Erni. On view February 23, 2012– June 9, 2012.

Hans Erni (born February 21, 1909) is one of the best known Swiss artists. Born in Lucerne, he is known in particular for illustrating postage stamps, lithographs for the Swiss Red Cross, and participation on the Olympic Committee.

Erni’s work is distinguished by its great diversity. His media extend from sculpture and painting to prints and book illustration, from exhibition design to the mural to tapestry. His themes are equally wide-ranging, from environmental, philosophical, social and political themes, to technology, science, sport and nature, as well as music.

The exhibition will focus on Erni’s graphic work, consisting primarily of his posters dating from WWII to the present. Approximately 40 posters will be borrowed from the Hans Erni Museum in Lucerne and from the artist himself, representing the first retrospective of his work to be presented in the United States.
