Spacetaker is pleased to host and everything in between, a solo exhibition by Houston artist Curtis Gannon, as part of its ARC Exhibition Series. Gannon’s collages and constructions are based on the deconstruction of the comic book media. His various approaches to presentation and reassembly explore the fundamental mechanisms of how comics communicate their message. This new body of work expands on Gannon’s collage series of intricate geometric patterns made of overlapping, cut-up, and woven comic book pages, to include the new plexiglass constructions and wall installations.

“After years of making paintings about comic books, I found I still wasn't expressing my concerns about the medium of comics,” says Gannon. “I wanted to explore how comics function and are understood as a platform for communication. Now, by using actual comics to make the pieces, I am able to deconstruct the medium to talk about itself. In the process, these pieces still reflect all of the characteristic elements that I love about American action comics: color, movement, dialogue, dramatic story lines, the media and Pop entertainment.”

“and everything in between.” is on view from January 13 through March 2, with a free opening reception on Friday, January 13 from 6 to 8 p.m. In addition to Monday through Friday gallery visits by appointment, the show will also be open to the public on Saturday, January 14 and Saturday, February 11 from 2 to 5 p.m., in conjunction with Winter Street Studios Second Saturday Open Studios.

About the Artist: Raised in south Texas, Curtis Gannon graduated from The University of Houston with a bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts, while simultaneously working for the Blaffer Gallery and Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. He later received a master’s degree in painting from San Diego State University. Returning to Houston in 2006, Gannon has continued to work in the Houston art community. Gannon’s works have been in numerous exhibits in the U.S., including at the Lawndale Art Center, Sicardi Gallery, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, as well as Marion Gallery in Panama.
