The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston presents MFAH Film Special Presentation: Hej Rup! (Heave Ho!).

In 1989 the MFAH presented the landmark exhibition Czech Modernism: 1900–1945 which inspired the current exhibition New Formations: Czech Avant-Garde Art and Modern Glass from the Roy and Mary Cullen Collection (on view through February 5). Hej Rup!, featuring the comic duo George Voscovec and Jan Werich, was among the many films screened as part of the original exhibition. In the late 1920s and 1930s, these Czech burlesque entertainers were leaders of The Liberated, a theatre group that became a center for Czech clownery and a reaction to contemporary political and societal problems.

Hej Rup! pairs their slapstick antics with a pointed anti-fascist message. Two unemployed milk cannery workers (Voscovec and Werich) discover that one owns a half-finished apartment house and rallies fellow workers to complete the building for use as a collective dairy.

Tickets can be purchased in advance in three ways: online, in the museum lobbies, and at the box office.

The box office opens at 5:30 p.m. for weekend evening screenings and at least 30 minutes before show time for most other films.

Parking:

Museum Parking Garage
Located directly east of the Beck and Law buildings, the MFAH Visitors Center features a four-story covered parking garage.

The easy-to-find parking entrance is on Binz, marked by a large, yellow arrow.

You're always protected from the elements when you park your car in the Museum Garage. From there, you can go to the Visitors Center lobby and find a ticketing desk and up-to-the minute museum information.

As an added convenience, you can enter the Beck and Law buildings from the Visitors Center through security-monitored, climate-controlled tunnels connecting all three buildings.
